I’m Back

Hi gang,

It seems like a lifetime since I last added a post, so I thought I should post a little update.

I’ve had a frantic summer, which has included getting married (a surprisingly wonderful day and my half English half Dutch speech went down a treat), moving to a new continent and being separated from my best buddy: Alan (my dog) because of an incompetent Ugandan vet. A fantastic summer on the whole, but constantly busy and tinged with sadness at having to leave my boy in England with my parents.

Anyway, I’m now settling into my new home in Uzbekistan and dealing with the ridiculous summer sun and learning about my new school. The big news is that I am not going to be teaching literature for at least two years as the secondary element of the school is just beginning so only has Year 7 and 8. Not to worry though, I will be spending a lot of time on the site and making sure that I can give you my take on the stuff you need to know.

It’s been great having people get in contact to share their exam results, I hope you all did well and if not: don’t panic – these things happen and it is not the end of the world.

You may have noticed that there have been a few changes on the site; I’ve been trying to get a better advert coverage so the site can cover costs and have finally sorted it so that I can claim earnings (Google Adsense is a bit challenging when you are based in certain countries). After this is all sorted I will be finishing off the last bits of Rossetti’s poetry that I hadn’t got a chance to do and then ploughing into the new selection for iGCSE. Obviously I don’t have a class to rely on to add additional resources or essay examples so please do submit your own to help your fellow students/teachers around the world.

New posts soon!

Although I've only been teaching Literature since 2011 and did my degree in History, I think that makes me better placed than many Lit teachers to provide notes that make sense and aren't garbled and wrapped up with inaccessible terminology and effluent nonsense. After adventures in Uganda and Uzbekistan, I am now settling down in the Netherlands. However, currently I am just about as unsettled as I have ever been, with a new job, a new baby, a new country and a hundred other things going on! Ask me a question, collaborate or abuse me.

  1. Hello Mr. Sir!

I came across your website a few weeks ago, while trying to find resources to teach A Level Eng. Literature. I too lived in Uganda – were you teaching at ISU by any chance?

I was also wondering if you’ll be working on the Songs of Ourselves 2 poems this year – I know you have a lot going on! I’m finding it difficult to locate material for some of the poems (such as The Uncles) and would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

All the best to you and your wife!

    1. Hi Priya,

Not ISU, I worked for Rainbow. When were you teaching in Uganda? Where are you now?

I will indeed be working on Songs of Ourselves 2, but it might be a couple of weeks before I start as I’ve got to get my feet under the table at my new school and then finish off some odds and ends for A2 poetry. My plan is to send an email out to all subscribers as soon as I am underway.

It’d be great if you could contribute anything useful you find or pupil essays/powerpoints or whatever, if you get a chance.

      Cheers,

      Mr Sir
